Golden Corral closes another restaurant as shutdowns mount

by admin

Golden Corral has closed another restaurant, adding to a growing list of shutdowns this year, leaving some communities without a familiar destination for affordable family meals as the buffet chain navigates rising operating costs and shifting consumer spending habits.

For diners who rely on its all-you-can-eat offerings, losing a nearby location could mean traveling farther for the same experience or spending more on a family meal elsewhere.

And while Golden Corral continues to pursue expansion opportunities, its recent closures raise questions about how the chain will balance growth with the challenges facing the restaurant industry.

Founded in 1973 in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Golden Corral is an American all-you-can-eat buffet chain that calls itself “America’s #1 buffet and grill.” The company operates approximately 350 restaurants across the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and is known for its wide selection of comfort food, signature yeast rolls, and family-oriented dining.

Golden Corral permanently closed its restaurant at 19120 E. Valley View Parkway in Independence, Missouri, on Oct. 4, after 15 years of serving the community for 15 years.

Although the Golden Corral website lists the Independence location as temporarily closed, an employee confirmed the closure was permanent, the Kansas City Star reported.

Golden Corral still operates eight restaurants across Missouri. However, the shutdown leaves diners in the Independence area with fewer nearby options. The closest locations are at 8800 N. Skyview Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, more than 31 miles away, and 13440 S. Blackbob Road in Olathe, Kansas, more than 35 miles away.

For customers who previously relied on the Independence restaurant, those distances could make a routine family meal less convenient.

Golden Corral’s previous restaurant closures in 2026

The Independence shutdown follows at least six other Golden Corral restaurant closures across six states in 2026, according to local news reports reviewed by TheStreet.

The closures include:

  • Brownsville, Texas: Closed at 4555 North Expressway 77/83 on Sept. 14 after 35 years due to a significant rent increase, MySA reported.
  • Boise, Idaho: Closed at 8640 E. Emerald Street in September after 25 years for undisclosed reasons, the Idaho Statesman reported.
  • Boynton Beach, Florida: Closed at 389 Winchester Park Boulevard on July 26 after 20 years due to a lease expiration, The Palm Beach Post reported.
  • Davenport, Iowa: Closed at 5202 Elmore Avenue on July 6 after 28 years for undisclosed reasons, Moline Dispatch & Rock Island Argus reported.
  • Alton, Illinois: Closed at 350 Homer M. Adams Parkway on April 23 after 27 years due to unsustainable business operations and severe staffing shortages, St. Louis Business Journal reported.
  • Canton, Ohio: Closed at 4910 Dressler Rd NW on Feb. 1 after 24 years for undisclosed reasons, Canton Repository reported.

Reported reasons for the closures include higher rent, lease expirations, staffing shortages, and operational challenges, although some remain undisclosed. The shutdowns do not necessarily indicate an accelerating trend, as circumstances vary among the independently operated franchises.

What is putting pressure on Golden Corral and the restaurant industry?

Golden Corral’s closures come as restaurant operators continue to navigate higher operating expenses and consumers become more selective about spending on meals away from home.

The COVID-19 pandemic dealt a significant blow to the buffet industry, as restaurants were temporarily unable to operate their traditional self-service formats. In 2020, Golden Corral’s largest franchise group, 1069 Restaurant Group LLC, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The chain has since worked to rebuild its business. Company executives have acknowledged that customers are increasingly selective about how frequently they dine out, even when they continue to see value in the restaurant’s offerings.

Golden Corral CEO Lance Trenary told FSR Magazine in a 2026 interview that the company maintains a value advantage over its family-dining competitors, but that value and affordability are not necessarily the same thing.

Trenary said guests have not necessarily changed their opinion of Golden Corral, but may not be able to visit as frequently as they once did. He also said the chain’s loyal customers visit about 70 times per year, or roughly 1.5 times each week.

That distinction matters for a buffet business built around repeat visits. Customers may still appreciate meal selection and prices while cutting back on restaurant trips to manage their household budgets.

Rising food costs add to the challenge

Restaurant operators are also dealing with higher food prices. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices for food away from home increased 3.5% in the 12 months ending September 2026.

Beef has been an additional pressure for restaurants that serve it in large quantities. Beef prices were 9.4% higher in July 2026 than in July 2025, while the U.S. Department of Agriculture forecast beef and veal prices to increase 9.8% in 2026, according to its Food Price Outlook.

Those figures illustrate the broader cost environment facing restaurant operators. However, they do not establish that inflation or beef prices directly caused any particular Golden Corral restaurant to close.

For Golden Corral, maintaining its value proposition while managing those expenses is especially important because its business model depends on offering customers a wide variety of food for one price.

“We’re not going to follow the path of some other buffet chains in the past that have tried to cheapen their menu during these high inflationary times,” said Trenary. “We’re still going all out with high quality and the things that our guests love.”

Instead of substantially reducing the quality of its offerings, Trenary said Golden Corral continues to serve roughly 150 items made fresh each day, including some of its most expensive offerings.

That strategy reflects the challenge of balancing the chain’s all-you-can-eat model with rising expenses while continuing to offer a price customers consider worthwhile.

Why Golden Corral is closing restaurants

Golden Corral has acknowledged that it has recently been closing more restaurants than usual, but the company said there is no single explanation for the shutdowns. The circumstances vary among individual franchise entities, which operate approximately 90% of the chain’s restaurants.

“Each circumstance is unique, but we are very committed to working with our franchisees to transfer ownership to either another franchise entity or company operations,” Golden Corral told Restaurant Dive in an email.

The company also said that several restaurants will likely reopen under new franchise ownership.

Golden Corral continues to pursue expansion

Despite its recent closures, Golden Corral continues to look for opportunities to expand its traditional buffet business.

The company has expanded into Puerto Rico, where one of its restaurants became the first new restaurant to exceed $12 million in annual sales, according to FSR Magazine.

Golden Corral has also partnered with a firm to evaluate potential markets and has received interest from Mexico, Brazil, Canada, the U.K., and the Middle East. However, no development agreement has been completed in those markets.

The chain confirmed it currently has six new restaurants under development.

Here’s some of my previous coverage on the buffet restaurant business:

While Golden Corral continues to pursue growth, some communities have already lost local restaurants. Whether additional closures follow will depend on individual franchise decisions, operating conditions, and the company’s ability to balance its value-focused dining model with the costs of running a buffet.
